As Women’s International Day celebrates its silver anniversary after 25 years, we look at what’s changed for women in this space of time. How much more needs to be done? There’s no doubt that feminist movements such as the suffragette movement, perhaps the most famous of all, have substantially improved the lives of women in the Western world. Let’s remember that a mere century ago, women were unable to vote. In terms of laws, women have continued to break free from the shackles of oppressive regulation for over a century. There is the Gender Equality Act 2010, The Sex Discrimination Act 1975 and The Employment Equality (Sex Discrimination) Regulations 2005 to name a few. But why are we still fighting for equality?



Respect and tolerance vital in schools

The government have reinforced the promotion of tolerance and respect in British schools recently, stating these are key British values. The guidance document released by the government at the end of November, entitled ‘Promoting fundamental British values as part of SMSC in schools,’ comes after a number of statements made by members of the government, following concerns around an Islamist takeover in Birmingham schools earlier this year.



Tackling homophobic abuse with education

A new anti-homophobia education initiative has recently been launched by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in order to tackle discrimination aimed at young LGBT people. The programme comes after Stonewall, the lesbian, gay and bisexual charity involved in the development of the educational resources, revealed that more than half of LGBT pupils are bullied because of their sexuality. 



A call to action over diversity

Campaigners working to address the lack of diversity in children’s books have taken their fight online to help raise awareness of equality and diversity issues. The social media campaign, led by a group of authors including Ellen Oh, Aisha Saeed and Chelsea Pitcher, has been launched with a public “call to action”, encouraging people to go online to support the push for great diversity in children’s literature.
